Ween - Chocolate Town

I worked a few days for these guys when this record had just come out and they were shooting a live concert DVD. Nicest guys in the world. "Dean Ween" (Mickey) was one of the funniest guys I've ever met, like weapons-grade crazy pee your pants funny.

Had a great phone conversation with one of my high school football coaches, a teacher, friend and mentor earlier tonight. We at once agree on a lot and not too much, but the Venn diagram on our sensibilities mostly overlaps. One year we were teammates on a semi-pro football team, the Hyde Park Cowboys of the EFL. Thought of this song because we had a teammate named Larry DeVoe. We didn't even talk about Larry on the call, but I'm a sucker for the cheesy music of the 80s and 90s and Larry was such a character, it crossed my mind.

This ex-Marine and very nice family guy in my experience has had a brilliant music career. Look him up. This is my favorite song from his first solo album which is one of those rare ones where every song is really good. I'd be a jerk if I didn't link to Duty Free from the same album which was good enough that Cracker covered it and had a hit with it.

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue - Full Album

This album changed my life. Already fully immersed in the Blues from my earliest memories, in the '90s got into Jazz. Reconnected with one of my oldest and best friend's younger brother, David, who's a Jazz guy. We were living down the street in Chicago and both had Mon.-Thurs. traveling jobs. We literally bumped into each other one night in Michigan. Dave slapped me on the shoulder from behind and I thought some Grand Rapids guy thinks I'm looking at his girlfriend or something. I stood up ready for a fight and instead got a big smile and hug from Dave. We had a proper session at that joint which had dollar beers and burgers on Wednesday night. So in Chicago every Thursday night Dave and I would get home and hang at his place on Pierce St., sip good scotch and listen to old Jazz. Great conversations, great music.
