The Police - Demolition Man

No idea why, but this whole album has been in my head all day. The Police are one of the great bands I never got to see live. They haven't toured much since the early '80s. Maybe because the guys in the band famously hate each other. Maybe they could do a package tour with the Kinks and Oasis and each show could end in a WWF-style steel cage battle royale lumberjack Texas death match.

Had a great phone conversation with one of my high school football coaches, a teacher, friend and mentor earlier tonight. We at once agree on a lot and not too much, but the Venn diagram on our sensibilities mostly overlaps. One year we were teammates on a semi-pro football team, the Hyde Park Cowboys of the EFL. Thought of this song because we had a teammate named Larry DeVoe. We didn't even talk about Larry on the call, but I'm a sucker for the cheesy music of the 80s and 90s and Larry was such a character, it crossed my mind.

Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue - Full Album

This album changed my life. Already fully immersed in the Blues from my earliest memories, in the '90s got into Jazz. Reconnected with one of my oldest and best friend's younger brother, David, who's a Jazz guy. We were living down the street in Chicago and both had Mon.-Thurs. traveling jobs. We literally bumped into each other one night in Michigan. Dave slapped me on the shoulder from behind and I thought some Grand Rapids guy thinks I'm looking at his girlfriend or something. I stood up ready for a fight and instead got a big smile and hug from Dave. We had a proper session at that joint which had dollar beers and burgers on Wednesday night. So in Chicago every Thursday night Dave and I would get home and hang at his place on Pierce St., sip good scotch and listen to old Jazz. Great conversations, great music.

Supergoup from the mid-80s with Paul Rodgers (vocals, Bad Company, replaced Feddy Mercury in Queen), Jimmy Page (guitars, Led Zeppelin), and the journeymen rhythm section of Tony Franklin (bass) and Chris Slade (drums). "Radioactive" was the big hit from their one album, but I always liked this song. In the 8th grade when our parents either trusted us or were a little lazy, they used to let us ride the T (MBTA train) to see shows at the Boston Garden. It was Jake, Jay, Seth, and me, close friends to this day. Among the many shows we saw at the Garden was The Firm. It was Jimmy Page's first post-Zeppelin project. The opening band was Virginia Wolf which had Jason Bonham on drums, son of John Bonham whose untimely death caused Zeppelin to stop playing. The Garden crowd mostly ignored the opener, as crowds do, but when Jason was introduced before the last song, he got a standing ovation.
