UFO - Lights Out (Re-Recorded - 2023 Remaster)

In a kind of metal mood and thinking of an old friend who loves UFO.

The Jayhawks - Blue (Official Video)

Great band, great song

Ike Reilly - Commie Drives A Nova

This ex-Marine and very nice family guy in my experience has had a brilliant music career. Look him up. This is my favorite song from his first solo album which is one of those rare ones where every song is really good. I'd be a jerk if I didn't link to Duty Free from the same album which was good enough that Cracker covered it and had a hit with it.

Michael McDermott - "Willow Springs" (EXPLICIT)

Image
Hard to choose a song from one of my favorite artists and dear friend. I chose this one for a few reasons. When I got divorced 7 years ago, my 25-year friendship with Michael, our time together on the phone... This album and song saved my ass.

Elvis Presley - If I Can Dream ('68 Comeback Special)

Image
The King's later material is under-appreciated. The lush, orchestral pop of songs like this and later "Kentucky Rain" and "Suspicious Minds" are my favorite pieces of his catalog. This version from the untouchable '68 Comeback Special is fantastic.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!

Love this song.

Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell

Image
I only know Meatloaf's stuff from that one huge album and couple later hits. When I started doing this (almost) song-a-day blog last year, my roommate came home one night and enthusiastically suggested this song. Awesome choice. My roommate is moving across town next month. Sad to see him go, good guy, friend, and roommate. This one's for Josh.

Sly & the Family Stone - In Time

Image
In the 90s, Max Weinberg curated a few compilations called Let There Be Drums. This song was on Vol. 3 of that series. I always liked playing it on DJ gigs, a great transition from the early evening cocktail hour stuff to get into people's bloodstream and make them feeling funky enough for the dance floor.

1 - Liz Phair w/ Material Issue - The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Ba...

Image
For reasons I'll never know, Saturday morning cartoon songs have been in my head lately. In '94-95 there was a great compilation album of rock artists covering those songs. I chose this one because when it came out I'd just moved to Chicago where Liz Phair and Material Issue were among my first local music discoveries. Here's a link to the whole album .

Mojo Nixon - Elvis is Everywhere

Image
Mojo passed away yesterday. One of the craziest shows I've ever seen, c. '96 at the legendary rock club Lounge Ax in Chicago when I was living a block away and going to shows all the time. He was an irreverant bastard with a sick sense of humor, offering such gems as "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child" and "Don Henley Must Die." The world could use a few more Mojos.

Patti Smith - "Rock 'N' Roll Nigger"

As an actual liberal, I laugh at lazy social identity-poitics (Hi, Seattle!) who don't like this or don't get it, or are intolerant of anything that does not fit onto a button on their shirt or they can't chant in one verse. Dig this song, be willing for your slogan-based "ideas" be challenged, and try to get it.

The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty in Pink (Official Video)

The White Stripes - My Doorbell (Official Music Video)

Image
Today's choice was going to be any White Stripes song. This one came to mind because when Get Behind Me Satan came out, a rare album full of amazing songs, I just couldn't get it out of rotation in the car, at home, or anywhere.

Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime 1970

Image
I want to say I don't like this song, but it came up in a movie I'm watching and it's undeniably catchy. British blues band that wrote a catchy hit.

Ramones - Rock N' Roll High School (Official Music Video)t

Image
Not my favorite Ramones or punk song, but the one that introduced me and many others to this band and punk music.

The Firm - Satisfaction Guaranteed

Image
Supergoup from the mid-80s with Paul Rodgers (vocals, Bad Company, replaced Feddy Mercury in Queen), Jimmy Page (guitars, Led Zeppelin), and the journeymen rhythm section of Tony Franklin (bass) and Chris Slade (drums). "Radioactive" was the big hit from their one album, but I always liked this song. In the 8th grade when our parents either trusted us or were a little lazy, they used to let us ride the T (MBTA train) to see shows at the Boston Garden. It was Jake, Jay, Seth, and me, close friends to this day. Among the many shows we saw at the Garden was The Firm. It was Jimmy Page's first post-Zeppelin project. The opening band was Virginia Wolf which had Jason Bonham on drums, son of John Bonham whose untimely death caused Zeppelin to stop playing. The Garden crowd mostly ignored the opener, as crowds do, but when Jason was introduced before the last song, he got a standing ovation. And somehow, from riding the T to Out Of Town Tickets in Harvard Square and camping o

Bob Dylan - Jokerman (Official HD Video)

Image
One of my favorite Dylan songs. Mark Knopfler produced and played guitar, with Mick Taylor on slide. I believe it was the first video on MTV that showed the lyrics. Later in '94, Uncle Eddy called to say "Dylan has been crapping out the joint for the last 15 years, but he's back. I saw him last night in Boston. He's in career form, and playing clubs. New York tonight. You gotta go." Pre-Internet when you had to call around. I was working in North Jersey at the time, so I called around to the scalpers I knew from off-Broadway shows. Landed a ticket to pick up at McHale's Pub in midtown. Scalper on the phone: "Fifty bucks. You walk into McHale's, get a pint, give the bartender my name and yours, and you're all set. There's an envelope behind the bar with your name on it." It happened just that way. And then I walked over to the Roseland to see the greatest songwriter who ever lived from about 30 feet away. Bruce Springsteen and Neil You

MC5 - Ramblin' Rose

RIP, Wayne Kramer

Everclear - Santa Monica (Official Music Video)

First saw this band in '98-99 on the SnoCore tour where they headlined over Soul Coughing, DJ Spooky, and a young Black Eyed Peas before they broke big. Aragon Ballroom which is a legendary 1930-built room with trap doors behind the bars and an underground tunnel to & from the Green Mill jazz club across the street (prohibition). It's where Nirvana played the only live version of "Rape Me." I was on the house crew at the Aragon for a couple/few years in the early 2000s, working for Jolly, saw a lot of stuff, had the best experience. What a time. I'll spare you the full Aragon history. Look it up, ok?
