1 - Liz Phair w/ Material Issue - The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Ba...

For reasons I'll never know, Saturday morning cartoon songs have been in my head lately. In '94-95 there was a great compilation album of rock artists covering those songs. I chose this one because when it came out I'd just moved to Chicago where Liz Phair and Material Issue were among my first local music discoveries. Here's a link to the whole album.

One of my favorite Dylan songs. Mark Knopfler produced and played guitar, with Mick Taylor on slide. I believe it was the first video on MTV that showed the lyrics. Later in '94, Uncle Eddy called to say "Dylan has been crapping out the joint for the last 15 years, but he's back. I saw him last night in Boston. He's in career form, and playing clubs. Cleaning Windows

Took yesterday off from this, so I may go a bit longer! Today, a song from an artist whose music I love and who's also taken every oportunity to be a 28-karat prick. From being notoriously late for his own shows or not showing up at all, in one case cutting the support act's set short because the Lonnie Brooks Blues Band was killing it and Van the Man would not be shown up, so he gave Lonnie the hook (I was at that show), to phoning it in while standing at the back of the stage all night from audience view or (been to a couple of those), sometimes not showing up because he "didn't feel like it" but kept his 50% deposit, physically abusing his guitar tech on stage for trying to untangle the guitar cable he'd managed to get wrapped up around his ankle because he has zero stage awareness (I witnessed this and talked with the guitar tech after who told me, "We're 13 days into this regional 3-week tour, 9 guys on the crew, I'm one of 2 still here, he ...

Toto - Hold The Line (Official Video)

During the Covid shutdown, my oldest best friends from back home would have a weekly Zoom call to keep up with how everyone was doing. On one of those calls, I posed the question, "Which is the best Toto song? ( Toto IV was huge when we were in 5th-6th grade). There were cases to be made for a few different songs, and this is hands-down my choice. Also, my ex-wife had a co-worker who was a real "ladies man" and his go-to pickup line was when a woman asked him what he did for a living, he'd say he was the bass player for Toto. I told him that was kind of sleazy and he said, "No, it's kind of genius. I mean, who the hell knows what the bass player in Toto looks like? They never know I'm lying!" In related news, he was in sales. What a guy.
